Going to college is increasingly irrelevant. Even top schools like Harvard or Stanford.

I'm not sure why.

I suspect it has something to do with the overall low quality of available employees. There's a noticeable degradation in overall talent level in the US. Presumably, this forces employers us non-traditional measures. At least for the best jobs where performance matters.
